Socialist America? Obama’s Legacy

July 17, 2012

I have recently seen a particular quote from Eleanor Roosevelt pop up in several places.  It says,

Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people.”

While I think I understand where that is coming from, I believe it is sometimes difficult to separate the three.  In any event, there is one person currently who is doing more to change the idea that is America than any before.  That person, in my opinion, is President Barack Hussein Obama.

What is socialism?

According to Merriam-Webster, socialism is:

: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
According to that definition, we are well on our way to socialism.  I have already done one post on America’s progression towards socialism.  One of the best indicators of this process is found by looking at how much of that country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is owned or controlled by the government.

What steps has President Obama taken towards socialism?

President Obama has lead our nation in taking two major steps towards socialism.  Both of them have been greeted with huge fanfare and hailed as major steps necessary to right our economy.

The first was the trillion dollar stimulus package.  Among other things, our President promised us that this would get Americans back to work in record numbers, and that we would be enjoying and unemployment rate of about 5% by the summer of 2012.  When I last checked, the reported unemployment rate is something like 8%, the under-employed count for another 3%, and those who have given up and dropped out of the job market make another 3%.  This adds up to a total of 15% – 3 times the 5% that was promised.  With these facts in mind, the stimulus package can hardly be considered successful.

The second of Obama’s steps toward socialism is known as “Obamacare.”  Here are some of the truly dreadful things it does.

First, it is made to create and control a huge health-care industry.  While this will definitely create a lot more government jobs, it is not going to put more money into the hands of the general public.

Second, it will create a monopoly which will stifle the private sector in the health-care field.  Who can compete with a government backed business?

Third, it adds taxes (according to our Supreme Court – Obama calls them fees) which affect primarily the lowest income brackets in American society.

What can we do to rescue America from socialism?

There are a couple of things we can do to right the direction our nation is taking.  In many eyes the most prominent among them is to vote Obama out and repeal Obamacare.  This would definitely be a huge step in the right direction, but would not change the mindset that got us here.

A far bigger, and more daunting step is to change our idea of government.  According to the Constitution, government was intended to protect Americans, not monitor them.  Government was intended to protect American commerce from outside interests and promote free trade.  It was not intended to create trade, nor was it intended to suppress certain groups while promoting others.  It was not made to ensure that “minorities” got special rights; rather, it was intended to guarantee equal rights for all.

When we as Americans start recognizing these things and voting accordingly, we will be making a great beginning in our efforts at recovery.

Thanks for perusing my thoughts,
