A Few Thoughts about Flag Day

June 16, 2012

What is Flag Day?

Flag day is celebrated in the United States on June 14.  It commemorates the adoption of the United States flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1977.  It is not a federal holiday, and it is observed as an official state holiday only in Pennsylvania.

Why is Flag Day important?

Our flag is more than just a symbol of our military or our government.  It is more than a festive decoration.  It is more than a piece of cloth – more than just the sum of its parts.

Our flag symbolizes the toil and hardship faced by the Pilgrims and settlers that began our nation.  Our flag represents the incredible sacrifices that have been made to see America succeed, in science, war, and economics.  Our flag commemorates the lives that have been given for the cause of liberty.  In our flag is the pride and hope of more than two centuries of freedom seekers.

Our flag has been tarnished in recent years, but it still holds great meaning and value in our society and in our nation.

How can we honor our flag?

One of the best ways that we can honor our flag is simply to display it properly.  So many people think that displaying a flag is sufficiently patriotic without following proper protocol.  With that in mind, here is a link to a few of the rules for displaying our flag.

A couple that stand out are –

  • If you are displaying your flag at night it should be lighted through the night.
  • Your flag should never touch the ground.
  • The United States flag should always have the position of highest honor – it should be at the highest elevation, at the center of a group, and at it’s own right if there are only two displayed.
  • The United States flag should be the first one raised and the last one lowered when displayed in a group.

I hope you appreciate the significance of our flag.  I hope you are grateful for the sacrifices others have made for our freedoms.  I hope you are PROUD to be an American.

Thanks for reading my thoughts,

Dave
