Happy Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2011

What is the most important thing we do on Thanksgiving?  Is it the over-eating that most of us indulge in?  Is it watching football?  Is it spending time with family?

In my opinion, there is one thing that all of us can do on Thanksgiving which is far more important than any of the other things I’ve mentioned.  It is wrapped up in the name of the holiday – Thanks Giving.

Many of us would know the origin of the holiday.  The pilgrims had come through a hard winter in which over half of them had died.  With the coming of spring some of the local indians came forward to help them prepare the ground and plant their crops.  When harvest came the governor (Bradshaw I believe) declared a feast and festivities of Thanksgiving to God.  They invited their indian friends to the feast which lasted three days.  The purpose of the whole occasion was simply to thank God for a bountiful harvest.

Most of us have much for which to be thankful.  Health, food, lodging and clothing are things that many of us take for granted.  If you have complained about our current government situation recently, you should be thankful for freedom of speech.  If you have a large and cumbersome family gathering this Thanksgiving, you could be thankful for a large family and many friends.

To my point, the most important thing that we can do with the holiday is to remember our blessings and Give Thanks to God.  This should come ahead of the parties, the football, the planning for BlackFriday shopping, and the preparation for the first day of buck season.

Happy Thanksgiving – may your blessings and memories be many.
